SearchesSo, the first place to start is with your child. You already know his or her age and gender but what about his reading level? This usually matches the grade your child is in, but not always. Some children are very early readers and will be reading at, for example, a 4th grade level in 2nd grade; other children are later readers and may be reading at, for example, a 3rd grade level in 4th grade. If you have no idea of what your child’s reading level is, check with his teacher. Or, if you know of a book which your child has recently read with ease you can check to see if it is in the Kid-Lit database. If we list the book, we will tell you that book’s reading level.
Gender, age and reading level are all you need to know to do a basic search in Kid-Lit. Once you submit this data, you will be shown a list of books. Each book will be rated with Kid-Lit stars. The more stars, the more I think your child will like the book. 5-star books are those I think your child will enjoy the most. I will give you information on all of the books in the database which match your criteria - even if I gave them 0 stars. You can review the data yourself and decide which books you would like to bring into your child’s life.

Note: You will have the best luck using the keyword feature if you set all other criteria to None Specified.Kid-Lit lets you add keyword, genre and ethnicity to further refine your search.
To determine a genre your child likes think of some books that he or she child has really enjoyed. Where they about animals? Did they take place in the past or the future? Were they non-fiction? Were they about everyday life? This will help you determine a genre that your child enjoys. The main Kid-Lit genres are:
Animal Fantasy - books which feature talking animals Fantasy - books about impossible or improbable events often featuring magic, fairies and dragons. ![]()
Historical Fiction - books that take place in the past usually during a well known historical period such as the Civil War ![]()
Non-Fiction - information books including biographies and autobiographies Poetry Science Fiction - books about the future which often feature aliens and space ships. ![]()
Short Stories/Tales ![]()
Realistic Fiction - books about real life, usually in modern times. Subsets of this genre include Realistic Fiction/Ghosts - stories that are realistic but reference encounters with the supernatural and Realistic Fiction/Fantasy - stories that are mostly realistic, but contain some events that some readers will find very hard to believe. You can also add a keyword to your search. For example, perhaps your child loves dogs or cats. Or, perhaps you are looking for a book about women’s rights or orphans or arranged marriages. Select your keyword in the keyword box. Kid-Lit will show you books which contain this keyword. I have over 300 keywords, so you’re sure to find something of interest to your child.
Ethnicity may be important to you as a parent. Kid-Lit indicates whether or not a given book features ethnicities such as African American, Hispanic, Asian and Jewish .
